The Minimum Wage Increase in CT and What It Means for In-Home Senior Care

Mark McGoldrick Matt Hallisey from Matt Hallisey Government Affairs, LLC

A bill has been proposed to increase minimum wage in CT to $15 an hour, so what will that mean for senior care?

The cost of in-home senior care services will increase dramatically as a result of the new wage increase.”

— Mark McGoldrick, Owner of Comfort Keepers Shelton CT

SHELTON, CONNECTICUT, UNITED STATES, February 20, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ — ++

Democratic legislators in Connecticut will soon be proposing a bill to increase the minimum wage from $10.10 an hour to $15. Though it can’t currently be determined when this ruling will become fully effective, it could lead to many complications for business owners in Connecticut.

The pay increase will, in turn, lead many, if not all, business owners to have to increase what they charge for goods and services, resulting in an increase in costs for consumers. The increase in minimum wage is a new de facto tax on Connecticut residents. Connecticut is already one of the highest tax states in the country, and the minimum wage increase, through an increase in the cost of goods and services, will squeeze the middle class further.

Mark McGoldrick, the owner of multiple Comfort Keepers locations in CT, is fearful of the impact this bill could have on seniors specifically. “The cost of in-home senior care services will increase dramatically as a result of the new wage increase,” he said. “To keep up with employee pay, we will have to increase rates for our clients.”

Recent surveys show that more than 80% of seniors want to age in place in their homes. When the $15 minimum wage becomes effective, in-home senior care companies will have to increase the cost of services by nearly 50%. An elderly person who currently spends $1,000/month on Home Care will soon pay $1,500 for those same services. For many seniors, this rate increase will not be manageable.

In-home care services are not optional for many of the elderly, as they require assistance with the activities of daily living. They pay for these services out of their lives’ savings. This level of inflation is exorbitant, especially to a population of individuals who live on fixed incomes. The result of this increase will be to bankrupt seniors sooner and place them on Medicaid at an accelerated rate. This will further increase budget deficits in Connecticut and lead to additional tax hikes to Connecticut residents.

Company owners, such as McGoldrick, hope the timeline on the minimum wage increase is spread over an extended time period, which would give companies and consumers time to adjust to the changes. Business owners urge the public to take action and push for a longer adoption period for the increase.

“I am calling on the community to come together and take action by picking up the phone, writing a letter, or meeting with their legislators in person to express concerns for the minimum wage increase,” McGoldrick said. “Though this won’t reverse the bills’ passing, it could help spread this increase over a reasonable time period, to minimize the impact on seniors during the adoption period. The elderly are largely a population without a voice. We need to be their voice with the Connecticut legislature.”

We are very fortunate to be adding two people with extraordinary skills and experiences and visionary leadership to our District.”

— Dr. Byron D. Clift Breland, SJECCD chancellor

SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES, February 20, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ — Evergreen Community College District (SJECCD) recently welcomed new leaders to two key roles within the District's administration, appointing Jorge L. Escobar interim vice chancellor of administrative services and Dr. Beatriz Chaidez associate vice chancellor of human resources.

"These are very important leadership positions within our District and will help move our District forward. Following our robust search process, Jorge and Beatriz were the clear top candidates for their respective positions," said Dr. Byron D. Clift Breland, SJECCD chancellor. "We are very fortunate to be adding two people with extraordinary skills and experiences and visionary leadership to our District."

Before his appointment as interim vice chancellor, Escobar took on the role of acting president at San José City College (SJCC) where he had previously served as vice president of administrative services since 2014.

Before joining SJCC, Escobar held various leadership positions with Princeton University, Laureate International Universities, the National Hispanic University, and Merrill Lynch. He has extensive experience in strategic planning, business reengineering, fiscal management, business development, technology implementation, online education, and oversight of construction projects.

During his tenure at SJCC, the college opened an extension site in Milpitas, a welding lab, and a physical education building and gymnasium, among other projects, all of which were built under Escobar's leadership.

His educational background includes a Master of Science in education from Walden University, Bachelor of Science in business administration-finance from Rider University, Bachelor of Science in business administration management from Thomas Edison State College, and an Associate of Applied Science in business administration and accounting from County College of Morris.

"I take this opportunity as a way of exercising all my experience and knowledge with the ultimate intention of making our colleges the top choice for higher education in Silicon Valley," Escobar said.

Dr. Chaidez has spent more than 20 years in education, a career which began as a classroom teacher and saw her most recently serving as assistant superintendent for human resources with Salinas City Elementary School District (SCESD).

She has held numerous positions within education, including director of pupil personnel services and special education—also with SCESD—assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction with Sacramento City Unified School District and superintendent/principal with Raisin City School District.

Dr. Chaidez has extensive experience with worker's compensation, classification, and compensation of job descriptions, employment law, labor negotiations, California Educational Code, and Title 5, all of which will inform the work she does for SJECCD. She has also served as an executive board member for both the Association of California School Administrators and the California Association of Latino Superintendents and Administrators.

"I'm very pleased to be joining San José – Evergreen Community College District. My personal values align closely with the District's mission and values, and I look forward to using my skills and experience to help advance our mission and serve our students and community," Dr. Chaidez said. "I understand and appreciate the vital role that community colleges play in our educational system, particularly for many individuals from traditionally underrepresented groups."

Chaidez holds a doctorate in educational leadership from the University of California, Davis; a Master of Arts in educational administration from Fresno Pacific University; and a Bachelor of Arts in liberal studies from California State University, Fresno.

"Both Jorge and Beatriz have shown unwavering commitment to our District's core values of Opportunity, Equity, and Social Justice throughout their careers," Dr. Clift Breland said. "I look forward to working closely with both of them as members of our Executive Cabinet."

Psychiatry: An Industry of Death museum located in Florida chapter of the CCHR is part of an ongoing campaign to educate individuals on human rights violations.

From its beginnings in the 1700s, using the practices of confining, restraining and isolating people with mental problems in institutions, psychiatrists have cashed in on human misery.”

— Citizens Commission on Human Rights

CLEARWATER, FL, USA, February 20, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ — Comprised of 14 audiovisual displays revealing the hard facts about psychiatric abuses, the Psychiatry: An Industry of Death museum opened in Clearwater during the summer of 2015. The two-hour self-guided tour uses educational panels and videos created from interviews with over 160 doctors, attorneys, educators and survivors speaking out on abuse and fraud in the mental health industry. CCHR, a non-profit mental health watchdog dedicated to the eradication of abuses committed under the guise of mental health, opened the museum for the purpose of educating individuals on the history of psychiatry as well as their rights under the mental health law.

Among the more than 6,000 people that have toured the museum are psychiatric nursing students brought in by their professors to learn the truth about psychiatry. Additionally, students from nursing schools and technical colleges across the state come to the museum to go through the 2-hour self-guided tour as part of their clinical days finding the experience to be eye opening and informative.

The museum is open daily from 10am until 10pm and events on mental health rights, involuntary examination, psychiatric drug side effects and more are held weekly and monthly. Both are open to the general public and free of charge. For more information please call 727-442-8820 or visit www.cchrflorida.org.

About CCHR: CCHR has produced seven award-winning documentaries, with 7 million DVDs in 18 languages reaching 120 million people exposing drugging in the military, the irreparable harm of electric shock and the labeling and drugging of children. Initially established by the Church of Scientology and renowned psychiatrist Dr. Thomas Szasz in 1969, CCHR’s mission is to eradicate abuses committed under the guise of mental health and enact patient and consumer protections. L. Ron Hubbard, founder of Scientology, first brought psychiatric imprisonment to wide public notice: “Thousands and thousands are seized without process of law, every week, over the ‘free world’ tortured, castrated, killed. All in the name of ‘mental health,’” he wrote in March 1969.

Classify Iran’s IRGC as well as Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS) as Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO)

D

An Iranian regime “diplomat” is currently in jail in Belgium for providing explosive material to Iranian agents to target the July 1, 2018 gathering in Paris

Tehran must not be allowed to expand the IRGC and MOIS presence in the United States under various covers.”

— Dr. Majid Sadeghpour, Political Director of OIAC

WASHINGTON, DC, USA, February 19, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ — Organization of Iranian American Communities (OIAC) that represents Iranian Americans in 40 states, applauds ongoing congressional efforts to encourage the U.S. Secretary of State to classify Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) as well as Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS) as Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) as set forth in section 219 of the Immigration and Nationality Act (8 U.S.C. 1189).

The United States Government has designated both the IRGC and the MOIS as Specially Designated Global Terrorists (SDGT). However, stepped up efforts by these entities necessitates their designation as a FTO. In 2018 alone, the Iranian regime has doubled down its terrorism against its dissidents both in the United States and Europe.

An Iranian regime “diplomat” is currently in jail in Belgium for providing a highly explosive material to two other Iranian agents to target the July 1, 2018 gathering in Paris where senior former American officials as well as leaders of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) and hundreds of our members were present. In December 2018, Iranian regime’s ambassador in Albania and another diplomat were expelled for their involvement in the terror plot against some 2,500 Iranian dissidents there. In 2018, five Iranian “diplomats” were expelled by France, Albania and Netherlands and several other Iranian agents were jailed for their terrorist plots. They all have ties with the MOIS as well as the IRGC.

In addition, in August 2018, two Iranian operatives were arrested in the United States for acting on behalf of the MOIS for spying on NCRI officials in the U.S. for potential “capture and kill operations,” according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

Tehran must not be allowed to expand the IRGC and MOIS presence in the United States under various covers. FTO designation would further limit the Iranian regime’s ability to recruit on American soil to pursue its objectives, as the designation would make it a crime for U.S. persons to provide “material support or resources” to FTOs, whose members can be barred from the U.S. and their assets must be frozen.

As the most active state sponsor of terrorism, Iran has used IRGC to overseeing regimes’ nuclear weapons program and its cyber terrorism, as well as arming and training terrorist militias in Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, and Afghanistan, to name a few.

We once again applaud the U.S. Congress efforts in favor of the FTO designation of the MOIS and the IRGC and urge the Secretary of State to make such designation to mitigate further suffering of the Iranian people in the hands of these criminal entities and empower the longest suffering people of Iran.

The Rouleau and Barry fault systems bisect Durango’s Trove property and continue northeast and run through to the Windfall Lake gold camp. The Trove property is surrounded by Osisko Mining Inc. (TSX-OSK) and covers the same main fault system as held by Osisko.

The Trove property is wholly owned by Durango and the Company is looking to define the current drill targets by conducting IP on approximately 70 hectares of the property where gold anomalies in the till occur along the trace of the fault. Currently, four (4) drill targets have been delineated on the Trove property and two of these targets are in swampy areas which require winter exploration. Durango plans to complete the IP survey in the upcoming weeks to fast-track the exploration drill target definition.

Marcy Kiesman, Durango’s CEO stated: "We are looking to further define the Trove drill targets established by the recent exploration conducted by Bonterra Resources Inc. (TSX-BTR) on our property. Durango's Windfall Lake claims continue to gain momentum, as our East Barry Block located a few kilometres away from the Trove now hosts a gold trend over ten (ten) kilometres in length subparallel to the main fault system held by Osisko. The distance of this gold trend on the East Barry Block has doubled in size in 2018 from five to ten kilometres and borders Osisko.”

The Windfall Lake gold camp has been consolidated recently and has garnished the investment of Kirkland Lake Gold Ltd. (TSX – KL) in both Bonterra Resources and Osisko Mining, due to their continued high-grade gold results. Durango remains poised to make a major discovery on its 11,000 hectares of strategically located claims in the Windfall Lake gold camp.

The technical contents of this release were approved by George Yordanov, P.Geo., an independent Qualified Person as defined by National Instrument 43-101. The property has not yet been the subject of a National Instrument 43-101 report.

Grand Peace Festival in Philippines

Who is HWPL?

Peace Messenger to The Nations: Chairman Lee

What is HWPL?

Over 30,000 in attendance

Who is HWPL?

Peace in the Philippines, signing of MOU

WASHINGTON D.C, UNITED STATES, February 19, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ — On February 15, a grand peace festival under the theme of “We are One for Peace to Attain Sustainable Development” was held with 30,000 participants in the Philippine Sports Stadium in Bulacan in order to establish international peace s.

This festival was co-organized by Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light (HWPL), a UN-affiliated NGO headquartered in South Korea, and Volunteer Individuals for Peace (VIP), a non-profit corporation registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in the Philippines.

The event was attended by social, educational, and political figures such as governors, 11 Davao chiefs, presidents of 16 universities, professors, students, citizens, and media. In the opening ceremony, the students associated in 13 universities performed parades and performances for the festival.

Hon. Wilhelmino M. Sy-Alvarado, Governor of the province of Bulacan, delivered his welcoming message by saying “I thank all those who made this peace rally together and will devote all my best efforts to serve you, the heroes of peace, to achieve peace.”

In his speech, Chairman Man Hee Lee of HWPL stressed on the importance of uniting one as we are all peace messengers regardless of religion and nationality. He also urged for collective efforts of all members of society to establish sustainable development and peace secured by international law for peace. “Every individual of the family of the global village born in this era should become a messenger of peace to end the war and make sustainable peace a legacy for future generations,” Mr. Lee said.

As a part of combined endeavor for the establishment of international law for peace, Director of International Peace Youth Group (IPYG), Mr. Chung Young Min, encouraged the participants to support the Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War (DPCW) to develop it into a legally binding framework.

The DPCW was drafted by the collaboration of international law experts and HWPL in search of a resolution to build sustainable peace in the global society. It includes provisions to cease war-related actions and achieve peace such as respect on international law, prohibition of the use of force, peaceful dispute settlement, ethnic/religious harmony, and spreading a culture of peace.

According to organizers, this festival was the very result of a strategic partnership between HWPL and VIP to seek international cooperation for peacebuilding from civil society groups in the Philippines and South Korea through education and campaigns as a cultural approach. In their partnership through a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA), the two organizations planned to expand the work of peace starting with State Universities and Colleges (SUCs), Local Universities and Colleges (LUCs) and also established January 24th as ‘Day of Peace’ in support of the DPCW.

Dr. Ronald Adamat, Commissioner of Commission on Higher Education (CHED), as well as Chairman of VIP, expressed the expectation on the further partnership to promote peace education and projects for a culture of peace by saying “The value of our organization, so as this MoA, is to transform the Philippines into a society where people will live in harmony, respect each other to attain sustainable development.”

The event concluded with a signing ceremony of “Philippine Peace Declaration” as a common standard protocol to achieve national and global peace by abhorring all forms of armed conflicts, supporting all unification efforts, and educating the respect, love, and understanding.
